PBI adding jobs in Rock Hill

PBI Performance Products Inc. will spend $15 million to expand its Rock Hill manufacturing facility and add 19 jobs.

The addition will double the capacity of the plant, which is on Cherry Road, on the former Celanese site at Interstate 77.

A 15,000-square-foot addition will increase the size of the fire-resistant fiber and polymer manufacturing facility by about 50 percent, says Grant Reeves, PBI president.

Charlotte-based PBI also will add five jobs at its headquarters to support the Rock Hill expansion.

Preparation for the expansion will take more than a year, Reeves says. He expects construction to start in 2010 after engineering and design are complete.

Celanese sold PBI in 2005 as the fiber producer began to close its Rock Hill facility. The InterTech Group Inc. of North Charleston, S.C., now owns PBI.

PBI’s products are used in a range of applications, including fire-resistant firefighters’ jackets.
