The slumping economy is having an increasing impact on people and businesses all across the country. But for one mom and pop shop in South Knoxville, business couldn’t be better.
Ron Emery took over the nearly 81-year-old Emery 5 & 10 store on Chapman Highway from his grandfather.
“We have been lucky to beat the odds so to speak,” said Emery.
He credits the store’s success to loyal customers with a taste for old fashioned merchandise.
“We have a line from a toy company in Germany from 1912, we also have vintage stuff that you can’t find just anywhere.”
Though it’s managed to stay open, business hasn’t always been what it is today.
“He went through the first depression, competition really hurt us in the 60′s and then the store went into liquidation,” said Emery.
But it always managed to bounce back.
“At the beginning it was difficult to find out what to do but now I think we are over the hump, and thankful for loyal customers.”
