Clear Channel eliminates Charlotte jobs

Radio station owner Clear Channel Communications Inc. eliminated more than 20 jobs at its five Charlotte stations last week as part of a companywide reaction to slumping advertising sales.

Morgan Bohannon, regional vice president for Clear Channel’s Charlotte properties, defers all comment to the company’s San Antonio headquarters. A spokesman there e-mailed a copy of Clear Channel Chief Executive Mark Mays’ Jan. 20 memo and declined further comment.

In the memo, Mays cites an “unprecedented time of distress in the general economy” as the basis for eliminating 1,850 jobs at the company’s corporate, outdoor and radio divisions, with most coming in the sales departments. The cuts account for 9 percent of Clear Channel’s work force, according to Mays.

His memo offers no additional breakdown of the cuts.

“The company is also not breaking numbers down by geography or business function,” the spokesman says.

An industry source pegs the cuts at more than 20 jobs at Clear Channel (OTC:CCMO) stations here. The stations are WRFX-FM, WLYT-FM, WKKT-FM, WEND-FM and WIBT-FM.
