Rowan trucking company to lay off 100

Auto Truck Transport of Rowan County will begin laying off some 100 employees in mid-March, according to a filing with the N.C. Department of Commerce.

More than 50 shop employees and drivers, or 33 percent of the company’s work force, will lose their jobs March 16.

The company, which transports trucks and truck chassis, cites Daimler Trucks North America’s decision to lay off a total of 2,137 workers at its three facilities in the Charlotte region in March.

The company’s truck-assembly plant in the Rowan County town of Cleveland will lose its entire second shift. That move will reduce the work force at that site by 1,290, says the company, formerly known as Freightliner.

At their busiest times, the three Charlotte-area plants have employed 6,000.

Some 572 jobs are being cut at the company’s Mount Holly facility. And its Gastonia truck parts plant will cut 275 jobs.
