Job search is harder on applicants

Yahoo’s hot jobs search shows more than 700 jobs listed for our area. The ads include part and full time positions, some offering benefits job seekers desire.

Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new JC Penny at Turkey Creek.

“It’s coming along very smoothly, and we are getting ready to receive merchandise, ” said Store Manager Tracey Hitson.

Preparations for the March opening included filling around 100 positions.

“We had had a mass hiring event in Turkey Creek that was very successful,” said Hitson.

The pool of job seekers includes a wide range of applicants.

“From professionals to kids in high school, so there was a great selection of people to choose from,” said Hitson.

U.S. Cellular is continuing to hire about 15 people each month to join their call center.

“It’s unfortunate that we have some folks in our community that have lost their job, but we do our best to try and find them a good home here,” said Matt Sampson, the Director of the Knoxville center.

The good news for workers at U.S. Cellular is the company offers benefits that begin immediately.

“With so many people losing their jobs, I’m assuming that many have lost that insurance or soon will, so it’s a great opportunity to pick it up and have your family protected immediately,” said Sampson.

Mike Edwards with the Knoxville Area Chamber of Commerce says they are working to bring more opportunities into the area.

He says jobs are out there, but the market is a lot more competitive, so if you’re looking, try not to give up.
