Charlotte Chamber cuts Staff and Expenses

The Charlotte Chamber has eliminated three positions as part of a broader effort to cut costs.

The moves are expected to reduce the chamber’s expenses by 6 percent.

“2008 and early 2009 have been difficult for the U.S. economy,” Chamber President Bob Morgan said in a statement. “And while the chamber is confident that Charlotte is poised to weather this economic storm, and even see improvement in fourth quarter 2009, we must face the same realities that are currently facing our members.”

The cuts follow the chamber’s review of membership renewal results in January.

The chamber, which is Charlotte’s largest business group and lead economic-development organization, is cutting one position in each of three areas: member value, campaign, and business and education advocacy.

Combined with attrition and a hiring freeze that started last year, the chamber has decreased its staff to 43 from 50 at the beginning of 2008.

“We will continue to recruit new businesses to Charlotte,” Morgan said in the statement. “We will continue to have a pro-business presence at all levels of government. We will continue to help small businesses survive and thrive. We will continue to work one-on-one with businesses — large and small — to remove barriers that prevent their success.”
