While some people are losing their jobs and others are hoping to keep the ones they have, one Powell man has decided to own his own business.
“I’m exhausted. I’ve worked about 106 hours in the past week,” says Aaron Sugg, 29, the new owner of a Smoothie King franchise at 603 E. Emory Rd.
He says he’s always wanted to be his own boss, he just didn’t know how hard it would be.
“We’ve always enjoyed Smoothie King. And then we started thinking about the whole idea of owning a business and my wife, Stacy, is the one that actually came up with the idea,” Sugg says.
Sugg calls the decision to quit his retail management job and take out a big loan, especially in this economy, terrifying.
“The things we were hearing on the news, the things we were reading, seeing people laid off, those things were all negative factors in thinking about the business, but ultimately, we prayed about it and we trusted the Lord,” Sugg says.
So far, their location on Emory Road in Powell seems to be a good pick.
“It’s been pretty steady as far as business goes. Not the numbers we’re wanting to hit, but we’ve got our fingers crossed. With the warm weather coming, more and more people should be coming in I hope,” he says.
While Sugg is living his dream of being able to make his own smoothie whenever he wants, he knows that doesn’t pay the bills.
“Hopefully, the market will rebound. Hopefully, the economy will shoot back up. I know it’s going to take some time, but we’re here for the long haul,” he says.
Sugg served his first smoothie to customers one week ago today. He plans to have an official grand opening later in March.
