March unemployment rate reaches 9.6% in Tennessee
Tennessee labor officials say the state’s unemployment rate for March was 9.6%, up 0.6% percentage point from the February rate.
The March rate a year ago was 5.7%. The national unemployment rate for March was 8.5%, up from the February rate of 8.1%.

Two Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College culinary students with a passion for pastry recently opened Crème Patisserie & Confectionery in Merrimon Square shopping center.

NC unemployment a record 10.8 percent
North Carolina’s rising unemployment rate slowed in March to 10.8 percent, a positive sign since the number had been rapidly worsening each month since the banking and credit crisis took hold last fall, the state Employment Security Commission said Friday.

AT&T opens south Charlotte store
AT&T Inc. has opened a 5,000-square-foot retail store in the Blakeney shopping area.
The store, with 11 employees, is at 9840 Rea Road in south Charlotte.
It will feature AT&T’s portfolio of wireless, broadband, video and wireline products.
In addition, the store will sell AT&T broadband and Advanced TV services.

Pulte to acquire Centex for $1.3B
Pulte Homes Inc. will acquire Centex Corp. in a $1.3 billion stock deal that includes $1.8 billion of debt.
