The Department of Energy announced today funding for 28 new wind energy projects, including two in the Knoxville area that will receive a total of almost $1.15 million.
The projects will “help address market and deployment challenges including wind turbine research and testing and transmission analysis, planning, assessments,” according to a press release.

Loudon company get state job-training grants
Remotec, a Clinton, Tenn.-based maker of hazardous duty robots, has received a state job training grant, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced Thursday.
The $6,950 Incumbent Worker Grant will provide training to eight employees in mill, lathe operation, Adobe Dreamweaver and ESD Program Manager Certification, according to a press release.

State jobless rate rises to 10.8 percent in June
NASHVILLE — Tennessee’s June unemployment rate rose to 10.8 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from May and a 4.4 percent jump from June 2008.
The national unemployment rate for June 2009 was 9.5 percent, up from the May rate of 9.4 percent.

UNC Asheville closes 2 centers, cuts staff jobs
ASHEVILLE, N.C. Two science research centers and eight staffers are being cut at the University of North Carolina at Asheville as the school prepares for expected cuts in state funding.

ElectriCities pulls out of conference at Asheville resort
Concerns over costs for member municipalities have prompted ElectriCities to scrap plans for a day-and-a-half conference at Asheville’s famed Grove Park Inn resort in favor of a one-day gathering in Raleigh.
The meeting will be Aug. 27 at the Raleigh Convention Center. U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., is expected to be one of the speakers.
