People laid off from work often ask, “What now?” First Baptist Concord and the town of Farragut are joining forces to help those people survive unemployment.
The seminar at Farragut Town Hall was called “What now? 7 steps to surviving unemployment.”
It’s part of the HOPE ministry of First Baptist Concord. HOPE stands for Helping Others Procure Employment.
“When you’ve lost your job, there’s a sense of injustice,” church member Stephen Arnold told the seminar audience.
When Arnold found himself out of work three years ago, he decided to start his own financial company, Storehouse Advisory Group.
“I really had to back up and refocus and see what it is I was supposed to be doing with my life and how I was supposed to be doing it,” Arnold says.
Now, he’s sharing what he learned with others who are struggling.
“It’s a lot of different emotions,” says Greg Sullivan, who’s been unemployed for the last year.
Sullivan’s wife recently lost her job.
“When he was talking about what your purpose in life was and what you were born to do, I thought that was really good. And it was also very helpful when they had the insurance guy come up and talk about what you need to do with your retirement plans and about Cobra,” Sullivan says.
He says he’ll leave with new ideas and excited about the future, which is exactly the message the church and the town wanted to send.
“There are other people going through the same situation or going through the same thing they are and they’re not alone and there’s help and hope,” say Anne LaGrow, the Town of Farragut’s special events and programs director.
The seminar also covered how to handle the stress of unemployment and how to adjust your household budget.
